Instantaneous Blue
by Aaron Craven
Instantaneous Blue is a deeply human Canadian story about love, memory, and the fragile balance of holding a family together. Written by playwright Aaron Craven, the play is informed by his experience as part of the “sandwich generation” and his work in dementia advocacy, offering an intimate and compassionate look at a journey many families face.
The story follows Edward and Sara as they welcome their first child while navigating the decline of Edward’s parents. As new life begins, another slips away, placing their relationship under increasing strain. Between raising a baby, managing medical appointments, searching for a missing parent, and sustaining their careers, they are pushed to the emotional edge. Along the way, they encounter the steady presence of frontline workers including paramedics, police officers, and personal support workers, whose care, urgency, and humanity become an essential part of their journey.
As their world becomes increasingly unmoored, the couple must confront questions of resilience, identity, and connection in the face of a disease that reshapes everything it touches. At its heart, Instantaneous Blue gives voice to those living the dementia journey, bringing it out of isolation and into a space of dignity, honesty, and care.
“Fantastic… Whether or not your parents are struggling with dementia and old age, you can’t help but feel for the characters in Instantaneous Blue as they maneuver their way through this exquisite disarray we call life.”
