291
“Love is a complicated beauty.”
291 is a lyrical exploration of love, art, and the timeless bond forged through handwritten letters. Set in an era when technology was still emerging and connection meant pen to paper, this play tells the story of one of modern art’s most iconic couples: Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz.
Their love was not shaped by instant messages or fleeting trends, but by a profound exchange of words and images—over 5,000 letters spanning more than 30 years. From the moment Stieglitz first encountered O’Keeffe’s charcoal drawings in 1915, sent to him by her friend Anita Politzer, a powerful correspondence began that would evolve into a lifelong romance and artistic collaboration.
291 pays homage to this extraordinary relationship, capturing the intimacy of their letters and the revolutionary spirit of their art—his photography, her abstract expression. It is a meditation on the lost art of letter writing, and a reminder of how love once thrived on distance, devotion, and the slow unfolding of the written word.
